Orléans, ON – Building on the Government’s previous measures to protect and strengthen the Canadian economy, our Conservative government today tabled a focused and prudent budget to strengthen Canada and Ontario amidst global economic uncertainty.

Through Budget 2009, the federal government is supporting substantial investments in areas that will create jobs, support workers, and strengthen our economic fundamentals.  In addition, we will be supporting the implementation of income tax cuts aimed at putting more money into the pockets of Canadians.

“Our government understands the current economic situation and is investing in key areas to help stimulate and support economic growth,” said Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa–Orléans. “This budget builds on the measures introduced by the Government in previous budgets and demonstrates prudence and diligence.  It has my full support.”

Budget 2009 represents the largest one-time investment in Canadian infrastructure in a generation.  This includes a new $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund to help provincial, territorial and municipal governments get projects started and shovels in the ground as soon as possible, a $2 billion dollar investment to support repairs, maintenance and accelerate construction at colleges and universities across Canada, and a new $1 billion Green Infrastructure Fund focused on the creation of sustainable energy infrastructure.Furthermore, we will make new investments for cultural spaces – such as libraries and theatres – over the next two years and invest approximately $100 million to help support major cultural and tourism events across Canada.

Budget 2009 is the result of the most comprehensive and inclusive pre-budget consultation in Canadian history. Its targeted investments will stimulate the economy, create jobs and protect those hardest hit by the recession.

“There are certainly challenges on the horizon and our government recognizes that,” said Royal Galipeau. “The measures outlined today in Budget 2009 help put us on the right path to getting through these challenges together and emerging from them even stronger.”
