College’s trades training program receives $4M boost

Plans to build a new trades-training campus for La Cité Collegiale got another funding boost Thursday when the federal government announced a contribution of $4 million to the project.

The expansion will allow the college to triple its programs to include training in 18 construction trades and admit more than 750 new students in construction trade programs within five years. Construction on the project is to begin next month, and the centre will open in September 2010.

The announcement was made Thursday by Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau, who was joined by Transport Minister John Baird and Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP Pierre Lemieux.

The 40,000-square foot facility will be built on a parcel of land supplied by the city at Trim Road and Highway 174. Last fall, the province announced a contribution of $6.75 million to the project.
